Reduce an image and inspect the result
Compress Image re-encodes a JPEG, PNG, or WebP image with your chosen quality and format. The comparison view shows the actual output size and appearance before you download anything.
Choose quality and format
Lower quality can produce a smaller file, especially for photographs, but it can also soften detail or introduce visible artifacts. Start near the default, inspect text and edges at full size, then lower the setting only as far as the image allows.
JPEG is often effective for photographs and does not preserve transparency. JPG and JPEG are two extensions for the same format.
WebP often balances photo quality and file size and can preserve transparency.
PNG preserves sharp graphics and transparency, but its quality slider is not used and photo files may remain large.
Changing format is a conversion, not just compression. A converted result can be larger than the source and is still made available because you explicitly chose another format. For the same format, the tool does not create a duplicate download when the valid result is not smaller.

Choose an output format and quality. Compress the image, then drag the comparison slider to inspect both versions.
Download the file
Check the dimensions, file size, and visible quality before downloading the new image.

Compatibility for very large images
The tool accepts files up to 25 MB and images up to 10,000 pixels on either side and 25 megapixels in total. These limits help protect browser memory: a compressed file can expand to hundreds of megabytes while it is being processed, especially on a phone. If an image exceeds a boundary, reduce its dimensions in a desktop editor first.
When the source contains embedded metadata or a color profile, the page shows the relevant change before processing. Re-encoding does not carry that embedded data into the downloaded copy, and profile-based colors may look slightly different.
What quality setting should I use for image compression?
Start with the default and inspect detailed areas in the comparison. Lower quality gradually until the file size is useful without visible damage.
Which is smaller: JPEG, PNG, or WebP?
It depends on the image. JPEG and WebP are usually better for photographs, while PNG is often better for flat graphics, sharp text, and transparency.
Why did my image not become smaller?
The source may already be efficiently encoded, or the chosen quality may be too high to remove meaningful data. Same-format results that are not smaller are not offered as duplicate downloads.
Will image compression remove transparency?
PNG and WebP can preserve transparency. JPEG turns transparent areas white, so check the preview before downloading in that format.
Are my images uploaded?
No. Inspection and re-encoding run in your browser after the page loads. The selected image is not sent to Utilaxy for processing.
