Plan focus and break intervals

Pomodoro Timer runs separate countdowns for focused work, short breaks, and long breaks. Set durations that fit your task, start a session, and use the completed-session count to follow the current cycle.

How the cycle works

The timer starts in Focus mode. When a focus session finishes, the next break is chosen from your settings: usually a short break, with a long break after the configured number of completed focus sessions. The next countdown waits for you to start it.

You can switch mode at any time. Doing so resets the current countdown to the full duration of the selected mode, but it does not add a completed focus session.

Set up and run the timer

  1. Choose your durations

Open Settings and set the focus, short-break, and long-break lengths. You can also choose how many focus sessions occur before a long break.

  2. Start a focus session

Start the countdown and work until it finishes. Pause or reset the current interval whenever your plan changes.

  3. Take the next break

After the alert, start the suggested break when you are ready. Continue the cycle for as long as it remains useful.

Choosing useful intervals

Twenty-five minutes of focus followed by a five-minute break is a common starting point, not a rule. Shorten the focus block for an interrupted day, or lengthen it when a task needs more uninterrupted setup time. Breaks should be long enough to step away without making it difficult to resume.

Audio alerts depend on the browser and device allowing sound. The countdown uses its expected finish time, so it can catch up after a background tab has been throttled, but a sleeping device or closed page cannot deliver an alert.

What the timer remembers

Settings and the completed-session count are kept while the page is open. Refreshing or closing it resets them. Use the counter to follow your current activity, not as a permanent record.

What Pomodoro duration should I use?

Start with 25 minutes of focus and a 5-minute break, then adjust the durations to the task and your ability to resume after interruptions.

Does the Pomodoro timer work in a background tab?

The countdown can catch up when the tab becomes active again. Browser power saving, a sleeping device, or a closed page can delay or prevent the alert.

Does the timer save my settings and completed sessions?

No. Settings and counts last only for the current page session and reset when the page is refreshed or closed.

When does the long break start?

A long break becomes the suggested next mode after the number of completed focus sessions set in Settings. You still choose when to start it.

Can I use this timer for studying or tasks other than work?

Yes. The timer can structure any activity that benefits from alternating attention and rest, including study, reading, writing, and household tasks.

Will a Pomodoro timer guarantee better productivity?

No. It helps organize work and break periods, but suitable durations and results depend on the person, task, and working conditions.
